Recently, the National Meteorological Center, the Meteorological Observation Center of the China Meteorological Administration, the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau, the Guangzhou Municipal Meteorological Bureau, and the Guangzhou Development District Administrative Committee signed a cooperation framework agreement for jointly building the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sub-center of the World Meteorological Center (Beijing)" and the "Meteorological Technology Integration Innovation Platform."
In November 2019, during a meeting of the leadership group for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development, the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Meteorological Development Plan (2020-2035)" was reviewed and approved, becoming one of the first six special plans approved following the release of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan Outline." The construction project of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sub-center of the World Meteorological Center (Beijing)" and the "Meteorological Technology Integration Innovation Platform" became an important means of implementing this plan. The project will take on the responsibilities of providing meteorological forecasting guidance products, technical exchanges, and training for countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road, helping the Greater Bay Area play a key role as a "gateway" in global meteorological services and promoting the construction of a comprehensive experimental zone for meteorological intelligent equipment in the Greater Bay Area. This initiative has received strong attention and support from the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, the China Meteorological Administration, and the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Government.
After drafting the project construction plan and passing the evaluation, the five parties have agreed to jointly leverage their advantages in policies, technology, talent, and funding to cooperate in building the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sub-center of the World Meteorological Center (Beijing)" and the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Meteorological Technology Integration Innovation Platform" in the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City. The agreement outlines the principles, objectives, construction contents, responsibilities of the five parties, and the organizational structure. It is expected to be officially inaugurated by the end of 2022. This will continuously enhance the effective supply of meteorological services, increase public satisfaction, and position the project as a pioneering demonstration window for meteorological cooperation under the "Belt and Road" initiative. It will provide stronger meteorological service guarantees for Guangdong to achieve "leading the nation in four areas" and to serve as "two important windows," as well as for Guangzhou to achieve "new vitality for an old city."
